Davydenko out in 1st round of BMW Open
MUNICH — Ivan Dodig of Croatia upset two-time champion Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the BMW Open on Monday.
Dmitry Tursunov of Russia defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-3, 6-4 at the clay-court event, Daniel Brands beat Tobias Kamke 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in an all-German match, and Marinko Matosevic of Australia beat German wild card Kevin Krawietz 6-2, 6-4.
6th-seeded Paire advances at Portugal
OEIRAS, Portugal — Sixth-seeded Benoit Paire of France beat Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands 7-6 (5), 6-3 Monday in the opening round of the Portugal Open.
The top three men’s seeded players, led by David Ferrer, have first-round byes in the clay-court tournament.
In the women’s event, fourth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain overcame New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic 6-3, 6-0. Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia came from behind to beat sixth-seeded Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2.
Seventh-seeded Elena Vesnina of Russia posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Portugal’s Maria Joao Koehler.
3 dead in Michigan HS golf team van crash
DETROIT — A minivan carrying six members of a Michigan high school boys golf team collided with another van on a rural road, killing the 30-year-old coach and a 17-year-old golfer, and a 27-year-old woman in the other vehicle.
Four other members of the Grayling High School golf team were in critical condition after Monday morning’s crash in Kalkaska County’s Excelsior Township, 25 miles east of Traverse City.
The condition of a fifth golfer was not immediately available. The names of the victims were not released.
Bailey told The Associated Press he came upon the crash shortly after it occurred about 11:30 a.m. Monday in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula. He had to use a fire extinguisher to put out a fire in one of the vehicles.
“There were three ejections and those bodies were laying around,” he said.
Excelsior Township is about 15 miles west of Grayling, which is in Crawford County.
Bills trade LB Sheppard to Colts for LB Hughes
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills aren’t finished tinkering with their linebackers this offseason.
Buffalo traded Kelvin Sheppard to the Indianapolis Colts for Jerry Hughes on Monday in a swap of linebackers two days after the NFL draft.
Sheppard, a 2011 second-round pick from LSU, has been inconsistent in two seasons in Buffalo. He had 138 tackles and two sacks in 31 games, including 24 starts.
Hughes was the Colts’ 2010 first-round draft pick from TCU. He’s had 62 tackles and five sacks in 40 games, including seven starts, but had difficulty finding his niche on the Colts defense.
Used initially as a defensive end, Hughes made the switch to linebacker with the Colts last season.
At 6-foot-2 and 254 pounds, Hughes’ versatility could be a better fit on a Buffalo defense that’s in transition under new coach Doug Marrone and new coordinator Mike Pettine.
The move is the latest change to Buffalo’s linebackers this offseason. Buffalo released starter Nick Barnett in February, and signed Manny Lawson in free agency last month.
The Bills also added a linebacker in the draft, selecting Oregon’s Kiko Alonso with the 46th pick.
Alonso is a hard-hitting player who spent most of his three-year college career playing in the middle.
Hughes became expendable in Indianapolis after the draft, too. The Colts used their first-round pick, 24th overall, to draft defensive end/linebacker Bjoern Werner from Florida State.
Sheppard was strictly a middle linebacker, who was part of a unit that struggled against the run in each of the past two seasons.
UCI to work with
French agency at Tour
PARIS — Cycling’s governing body will work with the French anti-doping agency to test riders at this year’s Tour de France.
The French agency has been involved in several rifts with the International Cycling Union, most recently when it refused to test riders at last month’s Paris-Nice race.
In a statement Monday, UCI President Pat McQuaid says his organization is “determined to ensure that cycling is a clean sport.” He adds that his group wants to make sure that “today’s young riders in the peloton are not tarnished by issues that took place years in the past.”
The UCI and the independent Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation will also work with the French agency to test riders at the Criterium du Dauphine in June.
The Tour de France is June 29 to July 21.
